Activities in Benitachell, Alicante

Benitachell and beyond

When you’ve done absorbing the atmosphere in the village, you can take a trip to any number of interesting and beautiful places by car, train or boat.

Whether you seek fine sandy beaches and clear water for swimming, caves filled with mystery or the thrill of the fair, this area has something for you.

Safe beaches for children

El Portet is safe beach with shallow water and the views across the bay to distant Calpe are stunning. A sunshade is recommended on this beach as it’s a real sun trap with little shade.

Children will love the fun train that runs between Jávea’s two beach resorts and all the family will enjoy the clean soft sand and safe clear safe waters at Jávea’s Arenal beach.

Toddlers will have lots of fun in the well-equipped play areas at Moraira’s L’Ampolla beach.

Beaches for sports

Nearer to Benitachell, Playa del Moraig is a naturist beach where the water is amazingly clear with great depths; it’s perfect for scuba diving.

The views here are magnificent over Cape Nao and if you’re looking for seclusion, Playa del los Tiestos is a beach that can only be reached by boat.

Only a 15-minute drive away, the blue flag beaches at Jávea and Moraira offer brilliant opportunities for windsurfing, sailing and jet skiing, while the crystal clear water at Moraira’s rocky Andrago beach is ideal for snorkeling.

Wheelchairs welcome

Many beaches along this coast have been specially adapted so that they are fully accessible for those of us who are not as mobile as others.

At Dénia, Els Morins and La Punta del Raset beaches have sand wheelchairs, ramps and trained helpers on hand so that you can take a cooling dip in the sea, maybe even have a go at snorkeling.

Family Fun

There are many places for the family to enjoy in this part of Spain from Disney style theme parks to safaris:

  • Aqualandia Water Park, only 30 minutes away, has paddling pools for the youngest and everyone will enjoy the water chutes and wave pool there.
  • Terra Mittica, about 40 minutes away near Benidorm, is the largest theme park in Spain. It is based upon myths and legends and set up like a large film set with gentle rides for the young ones and more daring rides for braver adults.
  • Vergel Safari Park, near Dénia, is a drive through safari of lions, tigers and wolf packs; it also has a fantastic entertaining dolphin show.

There are also parrot, snake and seal shows and for a small extra charge you can enjoy the scenery from between the humps of a camel.

Back to nature

  • Enjoy lush scenery with acres of vineyards and orange, lemon, almond and olive trees as you drive across the Jalon Valley.
  • Climb to the top of Mount Montgó for the most spectacular views.
  • Further inland, don’t miss the chance to swim in cool mountain pools at the crashing waterfalls at L’Algar. Take a picnic and enjoy the shade while you listen to the birds singing high up in the trees.
  • Visit the caves at Benidoleig and marvel at the grotto of Les Calvares with its cathedral like dimensions. These caves have the highest vaults on the peninsula.
  • Back to base at Benitachell you can enjoy the wonderful sunsets from Cumbre del Sol urbanization. The views are magnificent and on a clear day you can see as far as Ibiza.
  • The tourist office here offers guided walks of the area in English and Spanish during the summer months, all absolutely free

Cultural Pursuits

If you’re interested in the history of this area, there are archeological museums at Alcoy, Dénia, Elche and Jávea.

The museum at Dénia is located in the Castillo, an old castle built by the troops during the siege of the Muslim town and then refortified during the War of Independence. The museum has artifacts and information about life in Dénia from 200BC.

In Jávea, the streets of the old town are well worth exploring and here you’ll find a magnificent Gothic church, San Bartolomé. There’s also an excellent museum that highlights the history of the coast from Paleolithic times through Iberian, Roman and Medieval times.

  • Moraira has a fine Marina and some excellent Michelin rated restaurants and you can pick up some pretty gifts at the evening market in the summer months.

  • Calpe, an ancient fishing village, is famous for its Peñón de Ifach, a massive rock which towers from the sea, dividing the coastline; it’s now a nature reserve.
  • Take a trip on the Lemon Express train from Dénia to Gata de Gorgos or Benidorm. You can hop on and off at the villages along the way and the views along the coast are stunning.
