Fiestas in Benitachell, Alicante

Bulls and barricades

Fiestas almost always mean flamboyant street parades, music and dancing in the streets and noisy fireworks. Any of them give a great insight into the Spanish way of life and their fun loving culture.

Fiesta Calendar

January

On 5th is the Procession of the Three Kings when presents are given in the main square to all of the children in the village.

March/April

If you’re here at Easter time, expect to see somber processions of people dressed in black holding candles, following the cross through the streets of the village; there is a real sense of community at this time.

May

Fiestas de la Rosa – procession and fireworks with dancing in the street to live music.

July

The second week brings the traditional Moors and Christians Fiesta, celebrated throughout Spain. You can expect elaborate costumes and mock battles through the streets, culminating with the expulsion of the Moors.

There is live music from the town bands, dancing in the streets, banquets to digest and yet more noisy fireworks. In Benitachell everyone parties until dawn almost every night of this week so don’t expect to get much sleep.

During the last week of this month is the Bull Running. Bulls are let loose to chase after young men who run through the streets ahead of them, leaping behind wooden or steel barricades when the bull gets too close.

This event is best viewed from one of the specially constructed platforms or behind the barricades as people do get hurt from time to time.

There are fiestas every month throughout the region. See them all when you live here. There are Spanish Properties in Benitachell to suit every budget.
